Lessons in the Post was founded by Jo Marchant who remains our President today. Jo began teaching in 1967, she gained an excellent reputation as a classroom teacher in Essex Junior Schools, in both state and private sector. She became increasingly in demand for private tuition and became a full time tutor in 1990.
Within a few years Jo was seeing 30 pupils per week and had a growing waiting list. In addition she was also writing teaching aids for schools many of which are still being used by schools around the country such as The Amazing Decimal Machine and the Word Power series.
Due to demand from persistent parents on her waiting list Jo began to write down her lesson plans so that parents could take their children through the work at home with support from Jo as required. Parents and children loved the idea. The parents found taking their children through the lessons easy once they had got into a rhythm and the children found Jo’s lessons to be an enjoyable way to learn. The added benefits of being able to do the work in their own time at home without travelling and the significantly reduced cost compared to a private tutor made sure the idea really took off.
Jo’s husband Simon joined the business in 2003 as it grew.
Jo Marchant’s involvement continues as President of the business and she continues to take a strong interest in pupils past and present. She also oversees the development of new study materials ensuring that the quality of the lessons we provide remains as high as it can be.
Lessons in the Post is becoming increasingly popular and has grown mostly by recommendation and word of mouth.
Lessons in the Post today continues to focus on children aged 7 to 11+. We remain passionate about helping children both in the UK and around the world. We focus on either helping children reach their full potential in English and/or Maths, or helping children do their very best in the important selective 11 plus entry tests for Independent School or Grammar Schools.

Lessons in the Post has been in high demand from families outside the UK. It is one of the only ways to access Private Tutor Standard Maths and English support or 11 Plus support from overseas.
We also help families pursue Home Schooling or Education Otherwise. Our Maths and English courses help parents ensure that the core Maths and English skills are in place. We provide Private Tutor Standard home study lessons suitable for ages 7-11 Plus.
Lessons in the Post evolved from a very successful 11 Plus Private Tutors. We now deliver a very successful range of supported home study courses. We help children with 11 Plus Preparation or to improve their KS2 Maths and English performance.
