After qualifying, Jo Marchant began teaching junior school children in 1967 and moved to Essex in 1978. She gained an excellent reputation as a classroom teacher in Essex Junior Schools, in both the state and private sector. As a result she became increasingly in demand for private tuition, and in 1990 become a full time tutor, working from home. Within a few years she had 30 pupils seeing her every week and a growing waiting list. In addition to this she started writing teaching aids for schools, and published The Amazing Decimal Machine and the Word Power series both of which are used in junior schools throughout the country.
To help the parents on her waiting list she struck on the idea of writing weekly lesson plans for their children. The children worked through these lessons at home, with the help and supervision of their parents. Jo was in support and in regular contact by email.
Thus, in 1996 Lessons in the Post was born. In due course the private tuition was phased out and now all pupils are enrolled on Lessons in the Post programmes. The business has grown almost entirely through personal recommendation. Whilst most of our pupils live in Essex, we also have pupils from many other parts of the UK, and some from abroad.
Since 2003 Jo’s husband Simon has joined the business so Lessons in the Post can now expand to satisfy the increasing demand. Both of us want to develop this unique concept so that more children, with the help of their parents, can fulfil their potential.
